All About Moulds - One Day Online Course
This one-day intensive online course is all about creating shape. Much of the joy in fused glass comes from creating objects, both functional and sculptural, taking glass and transforming it. Moulds offer limitless opportunities to transform glass, from adding texture, to slumping, draping, dropping-out and casting, and this course offers a complete introduction to glass fusers who aren’t sure where to begin or want to expand their knowledge.
This course is demonstration based, you don’t need to buy any materials ahead of the course. Rather, you can gain all of the information from the course and decide what you would like to try afterwards. As the course is intensive, it will be recorded, and you will receive a copy to refer back to.
The course will be interactive and limited to ten students to ensure you have time to ask any questions you have and there will be opportunities for discussion throughout.
Suitable for complete beginners to using moulds, but basic fusing skills are beneficial to get the most from the course.
There will be a 45 minute lunch break and a 5 minute comfort break in the morning and afternoon.
We will cover:
Commercially made moulds - understanding the differences between slumping moulds, draping moulds, texture moulds and casting moulds, how to use them, set them up in the kiln and fire them, including an in-depth look at firing programs so you know how to amend them for specific projects (i.e. taking glass thickness and mould depth into account.)
Making your own moulds - including kiln-carving (single use texture mould), using Silkemat to make your own drop-out moulds and slumping moulds, making plaster and quartz moulds for frit casting and using stoneware clay to make your own robust texture moulds, slumping moulds and kiln furniture.
Mould prep - the differences between kiln primer, boron spray and when to use them, how to clean and maintain moulds.
When you book, I will email you a few days prior to the course with your Zoom invite and a selection of firing guides that we will work through during the course.
Please note courses run on London time.
