Stained Glass for Fusers - 4 Session Course
Stained Glass for Fusers - 4 Session Course
An introduction to the traditional stained glass process for glass fusers. Learn about historical and modern approaches to stained glass, before designing and constructing your own stained glass panel from scratch. Discover the benefits and challenges of using lead came, incorporate fused glass elements and solder, cement and polish your piece to a professional standard using centuries-old processes.
This course takes place across four sessions, one 2hr video call per week for the first three weeks, and an hour follow up session a month after the third. You will get the most benefit from the course if you make the piece stage by stage following each session. Each video call will consist of focused tuition and group discussion, with opportunity for everyone to get advice and feedback on their ideas and progress (if they want it). In most instances you are not making during the video call, unless I need to assess something you are struggling with. Most of the making takes place in your own time around the sessions. This course is limited to six students, and email support is provided where neccessary throughout the course.
This course is suitable for complete beginners to stained glass. Some fusing experience is beneficial but not essential. Basic glass cutting skills and kiln access are essential.
Students will need a soldering iron suitable for use with lead, such as a Weller 100W iron. Students can expect to spend approx. £200 on tools and materials for this course to build a 30cm x 30cm panel, if stained glass tools aren’t already to hand. If stained glass tools are owned, the project will cost approx. £50. Part of the first session will cover how to choose and where to buy stained glass tools and materials.

Review
‘I took this online course given by Catherine a few months ago. I'm a fuser in terms of experience but I have been curious about stained glass for some time so this seemed the ideal course to try since it combined both approaches. The guidance for the course was clear with both written instructions and videos to show us the various processes. Catherine is incredibly patient and approachable and was on hand to answer our many questions. We were able to get answers and feedback in-between the sessions as we worked on our pieces. We were also able to see what the other course attendees were making and share progress (or lack of!) each week during the session. Overall, this was a great session and has opened my eyes to another addictive process using glass.’ Margaret, 2021
